Ah, love video games? I mean, who doesn’t these days. So, browsing around online stores—totally not wasting time, right?—you just can’t miss the flood of platformers. They’re everywhere. Like ants at a picnic. But, hey, what catches the eye to be the next Shovel Knight or Celeste? Being unique, duh. That’s the vibe I got from Love Eternal, which I stumbled upon at PAX East 2025.
So, here’s the deal. Love Eternal, cooked up by sibling devs who apparently ran away from Oregon to LA—why do people always end up in LA?—this game’s a mix of influences. Wildfires, desolation… real cheery stuff, right? They’ve got this anime, Perfect Blue, in the mix too. Makes the narrative pop.
You start off as Maya in some suburban home, chatting up family—normal stuff till the phone rings. Could be a telemarketer, but no, it gets wild. Maya answers, and bam! Family? Gone. Poof. And the outside world? Yeah, that’s morphed into something ancient, fragmented, like an old, crumbling photograph. Talk about disorienting.
As Maya, gripped by this new reality—how much can you grip something that’s shaky?—you tackle platforming sections. Here’s the catch: you can flip gravity, walk on ceilings upside down. Now, you can’t cheat the system by flipping mid-air—gotta land first. But those red stones? Nab ’em and flip again, defying all expectations. Puzzles? Yeah, they get tricky. Screenshots show how insane it gets. Save points? Thankfully scattered around, because trust me, you’ll die. More than once. These designers definitely have a gamer’s heart, probably love Celeste and VVVVVV like nobody’s business.
The devs want you to get clever, using all your wits—assuming we have any left—to dodge death traps while the story unfolds. Escape some “castle of bitter memories,” get whisked away by a “lonely god”—that doesn’t come close to creepy at all… Expect shocks and a bit of trauma wrapped in a four-hour adventure. It’s dropping on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4/5, and PC later this year. Buckle up!
