YouTuber Restore Technique has embarked on an ambitious journey, crafting a remarkable 27-minute video that showcases his unique PlayStation 4 handheld project. This creation, a far cry from the streaming-only PlayStation Portal, might just be the true heir to the PlayStation Vita throne. Using a custom shell crafted through 3D printing, modified PCBs, and a 7-inch display, he ingeniously incorporated the original PlayStation 4 Slim motherboard to build a functional handheld PS4. Measuring at 249 x 156 x 49.2mm and weighing 1.7 Kg, this device is nothing short of impressive.
Unlike many of his peers who typically mod Nintendo consoles like the GameCube or Wii, Restore Technique aimed higher with hardware derived from the PlayStation 4. This console still holds its own, being powerful enough to run an array of titles. The PS4 Slim was a strategic choice due to its energy-efficient design, making it feasible to achieve the thermal and power balance essential for a portable gaming experience.
In his methodical process, Restore Technique wisely opted for a PS4 model with a compact PCB size, an effort that involved removing certain ports and components using high-end soldering stations and a Dremel rotary tool. This tool was also instrumental in trimming down the aluminum heat spreader, a crucial step for accommodating the entirety of the motherboard’s components. He seamlessly integrates a fan controller to keep things cool, though he does caution viewers about potential overheating risks in the video.

Given the power demands, a robust battery setup was essential; Restore Technique crafted a custom 3S2P LiPo 12V 10,000 mAh battery pack. Determined, Restore Technique refined the device by upgrading the controller frames and enhancing the device’s internal shielding and heat mechanics, which resolved the glitches and stabilized performance.
