Meta’s dropped something kinda cool — or maybe not, depends on how you see it. They’ve tossed an official Zoom app into the Horizon Store. Imagine that, hosting your epic online meetings as your goofy Quest avatar. Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh?
Side note: Zoom’s no stranger to VR on Quest. Back in the day, like, 2021-ish, we had Zoom in Horizon Workrooms — which was kinda this one-stop-shop collab app thingy. It was all about getting face-to-face in VR, tossing in a few webcam folks to spice things up, and voilà, a mixed reality mingle.
Fast forward to now, and if you’re all “just want Zoom, bro,” you can snag the standalone app for free. Meta’s calling it a slick extension of the Zoom Workplace app you’re already juggling on your phone or laptop. Makes you wonder, did they rehearse that line in front of a mirror?
Oh, and here’s a pic of what we’re talking about — something about seeing is believing, right?
The new app’s got you showing up in meetings as your Horizon Worlds avatar. But let’s keep it real, this isn’t the full-on immersive vibe like Horizon Workrooms. More like, hey, here’s a 2D vid of your cartoonish self. Totally enough for some, but might feel like a step back if you’re into that immersive kinda deal.
Now, would you actually pick joining a meeting as your Meta avatar? Okay, they’re cooler than before but still, hello cartoonville. Especially when compared to Apple’s shmancy new Persona avatars on Vision OS. Oh, and by the way, Vision Pro’s had a Persona-friendly Zoom app since, I dunno, February 2024? Time flies, or maybe I’m just losing track.
Anyway, if something’s free, who’s complaining? Want to get Zooming on Quest? Just hit up the Horizon Store, grab the app, and log in like you do on your other devices. Easy peasy. At least, in theory. Who knows, maybe it’ll work without chucking your controller at the wall.
