So, here’s a twist—Virtuos, those big shots in co-development, are letting people go. Yeah, stumbled upon this tidbit when French journo Gauthier Andres blurted it out on BlueSky. Something about cutting seven percent of the crew, which, if my math isn’t off, is like 300 folks. Oof, right?
Virtuos finally chimed in, saying yep, they’re cutting ties with about 200 staffers in Asia and another 70 or so in Europe. Oh, and fewer than ten? Apparently axed in France. Why? They claim it’s all about adjusting to what their partners and the industry are hankering for these days.
“As games get crazier complex, we gotta shake things up,” they said. The idea is to hone in on top-tier co-dev stuff—full-on game engineering, snazzy art, live services, you name it.
To their credit, they’re not kicking folks to the curb empty-handed. There’s talk of separation pay, job-finding help, and maybe even some re-shuffling within the other arms of their biz.
For the uninitiated, Virtuos carved out a name with stuff like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered—which, no lie, was awesome. They’re also knee-deep in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Plus, they’ve dabbled a bit with Dune: Awakening, Cyberpunk 2077, and Sea of Thieves. So yeah, they’re kind of a big deal.
And honestly, it’s not just them. Seems like everyone’s trimming down. Microsoft’s done, what, four rounds of layoffs in just a year and a half? Wild times in the gaming world, for sure.
